World Koresh and Kyrgyz Kurosh Championships will be held in Tatarstan
From June 19 to 23, the Republic of Tatarstan will host the World Championship and the World Junior Championship in Koresh Belt Wrestling, in which about 300 athletes from 29 countries will take part. In total, 11 sets of awards will be contested in the championship and the world championship among young men and men in weight categories from 60 kg to over 130 kg and the absolute weight category.
A special feature of the 2025 tournament will be the holding of the World Championship in Kyrgyz Kurosh, which will be held in Russia for the first time. Kyrgyz Kurosh athletes will compete for medals in 8 categories among men and 3 categories among women.
Both types of wrestling - Koresh and Kyrgyz Kurosh - are belt martial arts based on belt grip. These traditional styles have ancient historical roots, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the peoples of Tatarstan and Kyrgyzstan. The technical similarity and sporting value of these types of wrestling have already received recognition in the international arena.
At the same time, Kyrgyz Kurosh is a freestyle wrestling with permitted kicks, which distinguishes it from Koresh. Their popularity is growing among both spectators and athletes, and holding joint championships confirms the desire to strengthen international sports cooperation and preserve traditional sports in a modern format.
Preliminary fights will be held on June 21 and 22 at the Ak Bars Martial Arts Palace in Kazan, and the final fights and ceremonial events will take place on June 22 at 19:00 in a specialized arena in the village of Minger, Sabinsky District, Republic of Tatarstan.
The tournament's guests of honor will be legends of world sports, including four-time Olympic champion Alexander Popov, three-time Olympic champion Artur Taymazov, Olympic champions Shamil Khisamutdinov, Pavel Pinigin, Mnatsakan Iskandaryan, Timur Taymazov, Murat Kardanov, David Musulbes, Alexey Mishin, Musa Evloyev, as well as Olympic medalists and other titled athletes.
The winner of the absolute weight category of the World Koresh Championship will receive the main prize of the tournament - a car provided by the Rais of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov.
